Amputation

Did Someone Else’s Actions Cause Your Injuries?

Losing a body part dramatically changes the way someone can interact with the world, and an amputation, no matter what area of the body it affects, change the lives of not just the patient, but also their friends and families. Not only does the patient need to learn to work through their disfigurement and learn how to use a prosthetic limb, they need to participate in physical therapy and rehabilitation in order to fully regain their independence.

These procedures and services can be incredibly expensive, someone injured through someone else’s actions shouldn't be expected to cover these costs out of pocket.

Our Omaha personal injury lawyers at Domina Law Group have spent decades fighting for the rights of injured victims. Over that time, we have secured multi-million dollar case results in 11 different states, and have successfully recovered more than $2 billion in verdicts and settlements. If you were seriously injured due to someone else’s negligent or wrongful actions, contact our firm today to discuss your situation and begin planning out your next steps.

What Can Cause An Amputation?

Amputation can be caused by trauma, illness, and/or medical malpractice.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • Trauma - Serious damage that can only be properly treated through amputation is most often caused in car crashes, industrial accidents, and workplace incidents, usually involving heavy machinery.
  • Diabetes - Diabetics can suffer from peripheral neuropathy when their blood sugar reaches dangerous level. If left untreated, this damage to blood vessels and nerves can result in open sores forming that may require amputation to treat.
  • Cellulitis - Bacteria like streptococcus pneumoniae, staphylococcus aureus, and hemolytic streptococcus can infect open wounds and cause a serious infection that may appear similar to more common types of infections. However, these infections may require amputation if not treated quickly. Doctors need to take extra care with patients who have a compromised immune system, diabetes, or other similar risk factors in order to prevent or quickly catch this type of infection.
  • Pressure Sores - Prolonged pressure that cuts off blood flow to a specific area of the body can cause these types of sores to form. If they aren’t treated, these sores can result in serious complications that can only be treated through amputation.
  • Cancer - Certain forms of cancer, may require amputation when other treatments fail to prevent its spread.
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) - This disease is caused when fatty deposits build up and clog arteries, restricting the blood flow to these areas. When limbs don’t receive enough blood, the patient can begin to suffer from critical limb ischemia (CLI), which can then lead to gangrene, muscular atrophy, open sores, and wounds that won’t heal. Patients suffering from this require immediate treatment. If blood flow isn’t restored soon, they may require amputation to prevent further spreading of critical damage.
