Monsanto's Roundup Potentially Linked to Alzheimer's and More

Glyphosate, the main component of Roundup, was potentially linked to a variety of diseases in a recent review into scientific literature conducted by two independent scientists.

The review titled Glyphosate pathways to modern diseases V: Amino acid analogue of glycine in diverse proteins[1], was conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scientist Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D. and Anthony Samsel, Ph.D and published in the Journal of Biological Physics and Chemistry Volume 16 in June of 2016. According to their research, glyphosate can be mistakenly incorporated into peptides during protein synthesis by acting as a glycine analogue. Glycine has a variety of unique properties that according to Seneff and Samsel, when substituted with glyphosate, may very well explain a link to diseases like:

 • Alzheimer’s disease
 • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
 • Parkinson’s disease
 • Kidney failure
 • Pulmonary edemas
 • Diabetes
 • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

On June 14, a group of scientists urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban Monsanto’s product and gave testimony stating that Roundup poses an unreasonable risk to the environment, humans, and animals[2]. Dr. Stephen Frantz stated that:

“When a cell is trying to form proteins, it may grab glyphosate instead of glycine to form a damaged, mis-folded protein. After that it’s medical chaos. Where glyphosate replaces glycine, the cell can no longer conduct business as usual causing unpredicted consequences with many diseases and disorders as a result.”

The meeting with EPA scientists was hosted by United States House of Representatives member Ted Lieu (CA-33), and gave the independent scientists a chance to explain the connection between exposure to glyphosate and diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, autism, etc.

Glyphosate is currently classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The EPA agreed to analyze the effects of glyphosate in 2015 to determine whether or not they agree with the WHO’s classification, but that study may not be completed until sometime in 2017 according to the Deputy Director of EPA’s Pesticide Programs.

Domina Law Group’s David Domina and Brian Jorde are currently representing four farmers who claim that Monsanto’s Roundup gave them non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The firm has created an informational sheet for anyone in agriculture, including farmers, who may have claims regarding Roundup. You can find a copy of the sheet here.
