Kearney Hub: Republican Basin irrigation districts' lawsuit challenges augmentation projects, overall water management

David Domina was recently featured in an article on the lawsuit he filed on behalf of surface water irrigators against state and federal officials. If the lawsuit is successful, two multi-million dollar groundwater pumping projects could be paused. The plans to pump the groundwater into river tributaries in Nebraska is an attempt to comply with the Republican River Compact (1943). The lawsuit claims that state and federal officials did not do enough to protect the water rights of the irrigation districts affected and consequently, that the groundwater was overused. Domina stated that something had to be done in order to protect the livelihood of these irrigators. However, he is not hopeful that a trial date would be set before the end of 2013.
