Nebraska's Need for Forward Planning is Acute

The Nebraska Legislature’s special session in November 2011 is essential to deal with oil pipeline siting issues. The question is simply this: should the pipeline, proposed by a non-U.S. company named TransCanada, be built over the Ogallala Aquifer and through the Sandhills?

An alternate route for the pipeline is readily available. TransCanada already has a substantial line through eastern Nebraska. The existing line was placed about three years ago with virtually no controversy. Easement acquisition was simple. Environmental concerns were minimal and readily managed, and the pipeline was installed without controversy.
